Direct Support Worker/Employee Job Description
Position Overview: As a Direct Support Professional (DSP), you will play a vital role in supporting individuals with disabilities or developmental delays in their daily lives. Your primary responsibilities will include assisting with personal care, facilitating community integration, and promoting independence while ensuring the safety and well-being of the individuals you support.
Pay: Ability Advocates has competitive pay ranging from $20-$25 an hour based on experience. There will be opportunities for bonuses, overtime, raises, and annual paid training hours.
Key Responsibilities:
- Personal Care: Assist clients with daily living activities, including grooming, bathing, dressing, and meal preparation.
- Community Engagement: Support clients in participating in community activities, fostering social connections, and enhancing life skills.
- Behavioral Support: Implement individualized support plans, helping clients manage behaviors and develop coping strategies.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of clients’ progress, behaviors, and any incidents, ensuring compliance with organizational policies.
- Collaboration: Work closely with families, healthcare professionals, and other team members to coordinate care and address clients’ needs.
- Transportation: Provide safe transportation for clients to appointments, community activities, or recreational events.
- Health Monitoring: Monitor clients’ physical and emotional well-being, reporting any concerns to supervisors or healthcare professionals.
- Training: Participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay informed about best practices in direct support.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional education or certification in a related field is a plus.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Qualified to work in the United States.
- Ability to pass a background check and a drug test.
- Previous experience in direct support, healthcare, or social services preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Compassionate and patient demeanor, with a commitment to promoting client dignity and independence.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation may be required.
Working Conditions: DSPs may work in various settings, including clients’ homes, community centers, and recreational facilities. The role may involve physical activity, such as lifting or assisting clients, and may require handling challenging behaviors in a calm and professional manner.

Required Qualifications
Staff Requirements
- Staff must be 18 years or older (this must be verified by official documents)
- Staff must submit 2 references for Ability Advocates to check
- Staff must review the job description and agree/sign
- Staff must pass a background/finger print check as approved by DHS background check unit
- Staff must be a legal US worker (I-9 Form)
- Staff must complete mandatory reporter abuse training
- Staff must complete up to 12 hours of annual in-service training
- Staff must have a CPR certification within the first 90 days of hire date
- Staff must complete OIS training if needed
- Must sign ISP prior to working with a client
- Above average communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Some DSP experience preferred but not required
